Updated State Requirements
New York Department of State Continuing Education
All real estate appraisers and assistants are required to successfully complete 28 hours of approved appraiser continuing education courses within their two year license renewal period. The education must include the seven-hour National USPAP update course and a course of study pertaining to Fair Housing and Fair Lending. A licensee who previously completed an approved course of study in Fair Housing, Fair Lending and Environmental Issues (RE-2) or (GE-1) prior to January 1, 2022, must complete either the designated four hour or seven hour course on Fair Housing and Fair Lending prior to renewal. A licensee who has NOT completed RE-2 or GE-1 prior to January 1, 2022, MUST complete the designated seven hour course on Fair Housing, Fair Lending prior to renewal. For all subsequent renewals, licensees must complete the seven-hour National USPAP update course and either the four hour or seven hour course of instruction pertaining to Fair Housing and Fair Lending within their two-year license/certification period prior to renewal. Courses will be available at approved schools in the near future and may be completed and applied toward your current continuing education requirements.
Please note that you must complete an additional 14 hours of approved continuing education for each year that has lapsed if you renew 185 days after the expiration date of your license.

Updated State Requirements
Experienced attorneys must complete a total of 24 accredited CLE credit hours during each biennial reporting cycle (the two-year period between your attorney registrations).
- Total Hours: 24
- At least 4 of these 24 credit hours must be in the Ethics and Professionalism category
- At least 1 from the remaining 20 credit hours must be in the Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias category.
- The remaining 19 credit hours may be in any category of credit.
Experienced attorneys may earn CLE credit by attending CLE courses offered in the traditional live classroom format, or in nontraditional formats such as audiotapes, videoconferences, online, etc., so long as the CLE Board has accredited the provider to offer the course in the particular format, or the course is eligible for credit under New York’s Approved Jurisdiction policy.
Newly-admitted attorneys must complete a minimum of 32 credit hours of accredited transitional education within the first two years after admission to the Bar. During each of the first two years, 16 credit hours must be completed as follows:
- 3 hours of ethics and professionalism
- 6 hours of skills
- 7 hours of law practice management and areas of professional practice.
The first set of 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed by the first anniversary of admission to the Bar, in the designated categories of credit. The second set of 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed between the first and second anniversaries. Skills credit must be earned in the traditional live classroom setting or by attendance at a fully interactive videoconference that has been approved by the CLE Board for use by newly admitted attorneys. Ethics and Professionalism credit may be completed in the traditional live classroom setting, by attendance at a fully interactive videoconference that has been approved by the CLE Board for use by newly admitted attorneys, or by participation in the live simultaneous transmission of a live program, such as a webinar or teleconference, where audience questions are allowed during the program (synchronous interactivity). If there is no opportunity for questions during the program, then a newly admitted attorney may not earn Ethics and Professionalism credit for the program. Areas of Professional Practice and/or Law Practice Management credit may be completed in any approved format, including non-participatory formats such as on-demand video, live broadcast, DVD, audio recording, etc.

Every two years by the exact day of your license anniversary date
- Total Hours Required By The State: 22.5 hours of approved CE every two years
- 3 fair housing and diversity hours
- 2.5 ethical business practice hours
- 1 agency hour
- 1 legal matter hour
- 15 elective hours
A recent legislative amendment REMOVED the 15-year real estate broker continuing education exemption and now requires all brokers who were previously exempted to complete continuing education starting July 1, 2021.
